July 2025 – Abney Park and Stoke Newington

Abney Park by Jimmy Lu

Saturday 19 July 2025 – 11:00 – 15:30

Hosted by Jia You and Jimmy Lu

In July we draw Abney Park and Stoke Newington Church Street.

Abney Park is one of the “Magnificent Seven” cemeteries in London, established in the 19th century as both a cemetery and an arboretum. It is located just north of (Stoke Newington) Church Street, a vibrant high street with many independent shops, restaurants, and cafés.

To the western end of Church Street are Clissold House and Clissold Park, St Mary’s Church, and the Old Church.

Key times and meeting points for the day:

Saturday 19th July 2025

11 AM: We will meet by the main gates of Abney Park on Stoke Newington High Street on the east side of the park.

This is the main entrance to Abney Park, built in the Egyptian Revival style. It must not be confused with the smaller entrance on Church Street on the south side of the park.

In case of inclement weather, we will meet inside the recently opened Abney Park Café just a few metres behind the main gates.

Stoke Newington High St, London N16 0LH

What3words location: ///lazy.wished.scuba

1 pm: We will meet back at the main gates on High Street to look at the drawings.

3.30 pm: Back to the meeting point, to look at drawings and take group photographs.

Practical Information

Travel

Stoke Newington Overground (Weaver Line) is less than 5 minutes to the north of the main gates on High Street. Please check before travelling as sections of the Overground may not work some weekends. Buses also run frequently along High Street and Church Street.

Toilets

Located inside the pavilion that hosts the Abney Park Café. Clissold House also has free toilets.

Weather

The dense tree coverage inside Abney Park should provide some degree of shelter. For heavier rain, Church Street and High Street have many cafés. Please note that most paths inside Abney Park are not paved and can therefore become muddy in wet weather. Please wear appropriate shoes.

Orientation

Please note that Abney Park has two entrances. The Egyptian Revival gates on the east side are the main entrance, located on High Street. A smaller entrance is on the south side on Church Street. As it is easy to get lost inside Abney Park, we recommend that you download a map of the park here: https://abneypark.org/selfguided-tours/heritage-and-wildlife-route-1

Should you get lost, head towards the Gothic Revival chapel in the middle of the park, which is easily recognisable by its spire. Signs will indicate the main gate, and one of our members will point you in the right direction.
