Join us for some fabulous sketching opportunities on either side of the river Thames at Putney. The north side features Bishops Park, home to wonderful gardens and the ancient Fulham Palace. The south side is boaty and architectural. Putney Bridge station is in a quirky corner where you can also find the famous Jacksons art shop.


Key times and meeting places for the day
Saturday 21st June 2025
11am: We will meet at one of the main entrances to Bishops Park, on the north side of Putney Bridge across the road from the Premier Inn.

Afterwards: Stop for a drink at the Duke’s Head nearby.
In case of rain: trees and cafes will provide the best shelter or use the many cafes.

Practical Information
Travel
Putney Bridge Station (District Line) is about 5 minutes walk from our meeting place. Putney Station (National Rail) is 15 minutes walk. Putney Bridge is served by many buses. Local streets are in controlled zone Y with some paid parking. Putney Exchange Shopping Centre is a few minutes away with a large car park. https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey
Toilets
There are toilets in Bishops Park and Fulham Palace. On the other side of the river, Putney Exchange has loos, and there are many in pubs and cafes nearby.
Further sketching opportunities/
Just outside Putney Station is a quirky street which includes the tiny Doctor Espresso cafe, Hurlingham Books, crammed floor to ceiling, the Eight Bells Pub and the modest entrance to the wonderful Jacksons Art Supplies.
Small boats will be launching from the riverside on the south side of the bridge which makes for a busy scene. Watermans Green, our 3.30 throwdown location, belies its name with a concrete viewpoint of the river and bridge, with seating. You can see Wembley on a clear day.
Sketchers are welcome at Fulham Palace, the historical home of the Bishops of London (free entry). The grounds of Bishop’s Park include formal, informal and kitchen gardens. There are cafes in the Palace and the park. (Some of the historic rooms – notably the chapel and hall will be closed on Saturday 21st due to a private event).
There is a church at each end of Putney Bridge, St Marys on the south side has a lovely cafe and is an ancient church of historical interest. On the north side next to our meeting point is All Saints, with a 15th-century tower, a Flemish brass from 1529 and stained glass windows.
Putney Bridge Station has an interesting facade, and the usual shops of Putney High Street are punctuated by interesting buildings.
